The Markhor and Blue Sheep (Bharal) are two other key Caprinae species that can be found in Pakistan along with the Asiatic Ibex the Asiatic ibex (Capra sibirica) is likely the most abundant Caprinae species in Pakistan (Schaller, 1977). It is found in the relatively dry mountains of the inner Himalaya, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush, at elevations between 3200 to around 5000 meters. This species inhabits most of the higher mountain ranges across the Gilgit-Baltistan districts and northern Kashmir. It exists in the inner mountain range and inhabits the southern slopes of the main Himalayan chain (Roberts, 1977; Schaller, 1977; Qayyum, 1985). Outside this distribution area, there is an unconfirmed report of an isolated population in Koh Safed along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. If these animals still exist, this would represent the southernmost limit of the species (Roberts, 1977).
The Government of Pakistan, in coordination with WWF, issues special permits each year for certain areas and specific old-age animals to ensure sustainable hunting practices. The Markhor, also known as the National Animal of Pakistan, is a large species of wild goat that inhabits the mountainous regions of Central Asia and the Himalayas. It is known for its impressive spiraled horns and is considered to be an endangered species due to habitat loss and hunting. The majestic Markhor can be found in the hilly areas of northern Pakistan, including Chitral, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
