Touched by various invading cultures, Gilgit was an important staging point on the Silk Route and remained part of the Buddhist Kingdom from the 3rd to 11th century. Today, Gilgit, the capital town of Northern Pakistan, thrives on the Karakoram Highway to China. Along with Baltistan, Diamer, and Ghizer, it forms one of the administrative divisions of the Northern Areas.
Gilgit is a key junction for travel in the Northern Areas, with many tourists spending time here to prepare for or rest after treks, shop, or transit for onward transportation. From Gilgit, one can enjoy beautiful views of Rakaposhi Peak (7788m) and Domani Peak (6143m).
Despite a prolonged history of contact with the outside world, Hunza's perceived isolation remains to some extent. Buddhism first reached China through the Hunza Valley around 200 AD, and after the arrival of Islam in the 11th century, Turks, Mongols, Afghans, Timurids, Dogras, and Chinese passed through as soldiers, pilgrims, traders, and adventurers. This scenic valley spreads along the west bank of the Hunza River, 110 km north of Gilgit, providing rare views of a spectacular mountain panorama. Hunza is a starting point for climbers and trekkers, offering great options for day hikes, sightseeing, and diverse cultural activities. En-route stops at "Rakaposhi View Point" provide magnificent views of Rakaposhi Mountain, the 29th highest peak in the world at 7788m.
The Hopar Valley, a scenic part of the Nagar Valley, is often referred to as the "Shangri-La" of Hilton's "Lost Horizons" in northern Pakistan. Located about 10 km from Nagar Khas, the principal city of the Nagar Valley, it is the site of the Spantik and Hopar (Hopper) glaciers. Hopar is a cluster of villages around a natural bowl at a bend of the Bualtar Glacier. Opposite Hopar, the white Bualtar Glacier is joined by the Barpu Glacier. This area serves as a base camp for treks into the high, glacier-draped peaks of the Hispar Muztagh.
